Keeping it simple with a play on sound, silence and the moving image.
I might be running out of ideas because this video looks pretty much like my earlier “RGB Steve“. Unless… this is part two of the idea of interweaving sound and colour in a video format. If anything, this is what I was thinking for the other video so I gave it a go.
Again, I wanted to get away from the computer but I also wanted to keep things simple. In my other video, RGB Steve, I did all of the colour grading in FCX itself. For this video, however, I used a practical light, my Bolinger P1 and let the light determine the randomness. I then removed the live soundtrack from the video.
Since the idea of the video is rather simple, I kept it shorter than the RGB Steve video. I was thinking of creating a video that would have the viewer guessing what the person actually was listening to, but every time I think about that type of video I start to overthink it, which is why this one was done the way it is. Simple, and to the point.
I did a few tests and I guess I could have kept on of the earlier versions, but I had shot it vertically instead of horizontally. The difficulty with shooting something vertically is that, unless you remember to “fill in” the background with the typical duplication of the video (which is what YouTube does for vertical videos), you get a solid black background that leaves a whole lot of empty space. This becomes a problem when uploading the video because most sites won’t allow you to zoom into the video so, instead of getting that full frame, vertical look you were going for, you now get a squished version of it. So, I had to shoot it again, but this time, in horizontal mode.
I ended up recording everything with my GoPro 9 at 4K resolution and then sped up the final video in FCX. The result is a much more jilted performance compared to the smoother RGB Steve performance.
