May You Make Your Movie 2022 – An Introduction

Here it is! Again! May You Make Your Movie 2022 has now begun!

For those of you new to this event, it’s a small challenge, more personal than anything else, to make a movie every single day throughout the month of May. These don’t have to be big and fancy movies, they can be small, short, one colour, no soundtrack, anything, really. The idea is to create and publish every single day something creative.

  • Been thinking of trying out a new APP? Screengrab it and post that as an educational piece.
  • Wanting to try out some animation? Grab a piece of paper and a pen and start taking pictures of your drawing.
  • Want to try out acting? Set up the selfie cam and record your reactions to a few different news headlines.

And so on.

If you need some inspiration you can take a look at the playlist for last year’s challenge.

If that’s not good enough, here are a few ideas I scribbled down earlier in the week:

  • Black & White
  • Sharp Edits
  • Thinking
  • A Book
  • Foreign Language
  • Creative Subtitles
  • Plants
  • Story
  • Explainer
  • Intercut
  • Music
  • Stock Images
  • Special FX
  • Another World
  • Intro
  • Outro
  • 24 hours
  • Fight Scene
  • Animation
  • Nude
  • Every Minute on the Minute (EMOM)
  • Timelapse
  • Two-tone
  • Off
  • Writing
  • Montage
  • Zap
  • Limbs
  • Found stuff

One change I will try to make this year is to concentrate more on story and character development rather than just trying out new programs and applications. I’ll still give myself some leeway to simply try something out but if I can I’ll focus on story or some sort of relationship between the images.

There are a few changes to my set up this year, notably I’ve added a few other programs:

After Effects – for graphics work
Yingjian – for video editing on my cell phone
Xiaomi 11 Ultra – the phone
PixelMator Pro – for svg and other supplementary graphics work

Other than that, my equipment list is pretty similar to last year:

-Final Cut Pro
-Logic Pro
-Garageband on iPad
-Compressor
-Motion
-DaVinci Resolve
-Blender
-XiaoYi action cam
-GoPro 9
-Zoom H4n

APPs include:

-Audiolab – for audio converting, tag editing and wave form editing on cell phone
-Instagram
-YouTube
-Twitter
-Flipaclip
-TikTok (just got on it!)
-Notes

And don’t forget, if you’re going to join in the fun in creating a movie every day, hashtag it with #MayYouMakeYourMovie or #MayYouMakeYourMovie2022 so I can find it!

And with that, let’s begin!
