May You Make Your Movie – May 8, 2021 – Hallway Camera Projection

Another attempt at the 2.5D effect but this time I created multiple layers of the same image and then scaled them to fit the perspective of the camera.

Hallway camera projection.

I followed along with another one of Simon Ubsdell’s Motion Tutorials (which I highly recommend) to create movement within a single still frame. The image was supplied by one of Simon’s subscribers which can be downloaded from the link to the tutorial (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4nSbKVYczk&t=738s).

Similar to my previous attempt at 2.5D, I used a still image to create multiple layers and then scaled each individual layer to fit the perspective of the camera. I then added another camera for the animation effect. If you look carefully you can see that I didn’t get it entirely right as the right side is a bit off. I went through the tutorial twice from start to finish and ended up with the same result so I’m not sure where I’m going wrong. I could’ve spent more time messing with it but have decided to move on instead. It’s a neat idea and I’m sure I’ll try again.

Here’s a look at the project in Motion:

And then the rather simple FCX project:

FCX project.

I added simple dissolves to both the video and audio, chose the Drone Angelic Mystery sound effect, cut it in two and mixed them together, and then added a simple title card.

One thing I could’ve done with this image to cover up the fact I couldn’t get the proportions right is have them break away, sort of a like a sci-fi effect of sorts. Given the music, this scene would work in that regard. Another option would’ve been to bend or have them track long with the camera to distort the parallax effect.

Nice and easy, and an interesting effect.
