Happy Easter!

Baba in Church
Babuska in Church. Kharkov, Ukraine

I thought I’d make a little post to wish everybody a Happy Easter. As they say in Ukraine, Христос Воскрес! (“Christ is Risen!”) to which others respond Воїстину Воскрес! (“Indeed He is Risen!)

For those non-denominational folks, Happy bunny and chocolate day. (Remember those Cadbury commercials with the bunny who clucks like a chicken??)

I attended most of an epic Ukrainian Orthodox Easter service last night, dropping out at 2:30 am for a rest before returning to bless Easter baskets at 5 am. Quite the ordeal. After the blessing, my fellow church-goer and I returned to my place to eat the blessed food: meat (she says it was chicken, I don’t believe her), eggs and paska. Paska, in Ukraine, is amazing. Unlike in Canada, it’s served as a dessert at the end of the meal.

I will write more about Easter in Ukraine and Ukraine itself in a later post. Until then, Happy Easter!
